Now, look at Ephesians 5:21-25. One problem with the olden days was that some selfish men only read the first of those verses. Wives should submit to their husbands, but husbands should love their wives as Christ loved the church. Remember, Christ loved the church so much that He gave Himself for it. He was, is, and always will be God. But, Jesus was constantly serving while He was here on earth. He serves us now from Heaven. He never demands things selfishly. Jesus always has our best interests in mind. He is not like a man who won’t do anything. Laying in front of a TV and demanding that your wife wait on you hand and foot is not leadership. It is selfishness. It is sin.
The husband should always have the wife’s best interests in mind. What this means is, no abuse, no adultery, nothing that will tear the family apart. It also means that, just as Christ is the leader of the church, so too should the husband be the leader. So, the husband should try to be like Christ in his thoughts, words, and deeds.
