Some people look to please themselves to make a replacement for God. That shows a lack of faith. We all feel that way a little at times. But, that’s why that memory aid is so helpful. If you put Jesus first, then others, you won’t be trying to please yourself as a replacement for God. You will be taking a break from the demands of life. Even God rested after creating everything.
A good analogy would be video games. Of course, some are so filled with violence that they aren’t for anyone, but even taking ones that aren’t. They can be very addicting, so some use them to fill the holes in their heart. That means, they feel empty for some reason, and use these games to find pleasure. They get so wrapped up in them that their lives revolve around such games. Some are so realistic, that is a real danger.
However, something like that can also be used to relax. A half hour or so of a good sports game can help you relax. In fact, many video games have clubs you can join, at least online. It might be a way to make friends; friends who you can introduce to Jesus. Or, maybe such a video game is just something you and a younger brother have that you can agree you’ll always be equals at, and have fun with, even if you have to set some limits or even discipline him otherwise.
However you use that free time, though, the number one thing is to make sure you are doing it – like anything – for the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31.)
