One of the keys to praying for yourself is to not be greedy. This is the part of the Lord’s Prayer which speaks of giving us our daily bread. We don’t pray for everything all at once. Yes, there are some times when we are led to prepare. Joseph, for instance, was led to convince the Egyptians to store up wheat for seven years, because there would be a big famine. His brothers and father all came with their families to buy the wheat. Their lives were saved because of that preparation. But, we shouldn’t be asking for things in a gluttonous way. Or, in other words, don’t think of God as a vending machine where you can just get anything you want at any time you want.
Instead, think of God as one who will supply all your needs. One who will give you the things that matter in life – love, comfort, peace, security, and so on.
