This is one reason the Bible tells us, “Be content with things as ye have.” (Heb. 13:5) Such contentment is the key to overcoming the obstacle of poverty.
We have here a promise from God never to leave us or forsake us. He will never give up on us. If you have Him, you have the Creator of the Universe supplying your every need. It’s easy to be content with what you have then. You know it’s all you need, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.
In an attempt to speak to rich and poor, when talking about poverty, it’s best to start with a verse about it. It is a truth the Shunammite woman likely understood, despite her wealth. Jesus says in Matthew 26:11, “The poor ye always have with you.”
The context was that He would soon die, rise from the dead, and go back up to Heaven. But, it speaks to the fact that there will always be poverty. And, we must learn to love and accept those who aren’t as well off. At the same time, we must serve God no matter where we are, without being bitter.
